The Writing Center - For Students

The Writing Center is first and foremost for you, the student. We are here to help you better communicate your ideas in writing. We do this by working alongside you wherever you are at in the writing process. You can come to us with just an idea or a final draft, even one that has already been graded! We will meet you where you are at–whether this means spending all our time finding the best sources for your research paper or helping you refine the most persuasive wording for your thesis statement and then moving on to find logical fallacies in the rest of your essay. Our goal is to ensure you leave a more confident writer.

How do I schedule a consultation?

  1. Go to the Navigate app or website, benedictine.campus.eab.comRocky the Raven graphic image -Schedule an Appointment
  2. Log in using your Benedictine College email account.
  3. Click “Schedule an Appointment” in the top right corner on the website or “Appointments” in the app.
  4. Select “Writing Center” and choose either a 30-minute or 60-minute consultation.*
  5. Pick your date, find your time, and schedule.
  6. A confirmation will be sent to your email. Please fill out the intake form linked in this email before your appointment. You can also find our intake form here.

***Please note, both consultations will end 10 minutes early to give you time to fill out a post-consultation evaluation. When in doubt about how long you want your appointment to take, schedule a 60-minute consultation. You can always end the appointment early.

What should I expect during a consultation?

The Writing Center is here to offer suggestions on how to draft and revise your work and help you learn new skills to apply to future papers. We strive to match each session to your individual needs. Your consultation will start with getting to know you, your goals, and the assignment. Then, we will usually go through the following:

  • Check to see if it appears your essay fits the assignment;
  • Assist you in developing your ideas and finding evidence;
  • Improve the flow of your paper by offering structural suggestions;
  • Match the clarity and tone of your work to your audience and purpose; and finally,
  • Review any stylistic, formatting, or citation concerns.

It is important to stress that we are educators, not editors. We do not proofread assignments, but we will help you develop an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of your writing while working towards your assignment objectives. Let us know how we did at the end of a consultation by filling out an evaluation!

What should I bring?

  • Your most up-to-date draft (notes or an outline are perfectly okay!)
  • The assignment description
  • Instructor's grading rubric
  • Something to take notes

Can you email my professor to tell them I visited?

All appointments are recorded in Navigate and viewable by your advisor and any course instructors. However, we are happy to send a summary of your appointment to your instructor, just let your tutor know.
