Department of Architecture Events
The Department of Architecture hosts numerous events throughout the year for current students, prospective students, hiring firms, visiting architects, alumni, friends and supporters of the program. If you have any questions about upcoming events, please contact us.
Fall Student Showcase
The Architecture Department’s Fall Showcase happens annually during the midterm of the fall semester. Hosted by architecture student club Atelier BC, students from each class year have the opportunity to show their architecture work and knowledge in the McCarthy Gallery in Bishop Fink Hall. Open to the public, there is usually a guest dignitary (architect) visiting to speak with the students and give comments and suggestions.
Februum Showcase
The department’s premier annual spring showcase and fundraising event, Februum features upper-level students’ classical studio projects on display, along with hors d’oeuvres, bourbon tasting and lively conversation in a warm, elegant setting. Attendees also receive a commemorative student-designed bourbon glass and access to silent auction items.
Architecture Career Fair
This event takes place the day before the Februum Showcase and allows professional firms to showcase their work to our students along with internship and/or full-time opportunities. The event also features an exclusive Happy Hour to engage with upper-level students and their portfolios on full display. For firms that are interested in continuing the conversation and enjoying more time with our faculty and students, the career fair pairs wonderfully with the Februum Showcase the following evening!
End of Semester Final Reviews
End of Semester Critiques include a poster display of each student’s final project. In addition to a final exam, visiting architects, along with Architecture Department professors, offer a thorough critique of each student’s work. The event is held at the Muchnic Gallery, here in Atchison, at the end of every semester. This allows students to receive feedback on their progress not only from their professors, but also from esteemed architecture professionals from different parts of the country.
Architecture Visit Day
We hope you will join us for this group visit day, which has been designed to give prospective students who are interested in studying Architecture an insight into why Benedictine could be a great fit for them. This is an excellent opportunity for students and parents to meet faculty, staff, and students at Benedictine College, particularly within the Architecture Department. Students in all high school grade levels are welcome to attend.
Summer Intensive in Classical Architecture
The department’s Summer Intensive in Classical Architecture is intended for current and graduating high school students, as well as undergraduate students who are discerning an architecture major. Under the personal instruction of department faculty and current architecture majors, students will observe the time-honored intersection of architecture and the Transcendentals (such as Truth, Goodness, and Beauty) in a rigorous program that aims to open their eyes and minds to the future challenges of architecture school.
Study Abroad
Sophomores and Juniors have the option of a Summer Study Abroad in Italy for one credit hour. This is NOT a mandatory class, simply an enrichment. Explore the sights and sounds of ancient cities while studying some of the most beautiful and oldest architecture in the world. Typically two weeks long, there is a good deal of travel by foot. This program is not for the faint at heart!
“It is always necessary to begin those works again, those foundations again in time, which are fragments of eternity, and to begin those eternal foundations again whose source and rule is eternal.”
— Charles Péguy
