Missouri River Flooding Closes Highway 59 east of Atchison

Benedictine College sits high on the bluffs above the Missouri River and is in no danger of flooding. However, flooding on the Missouri side of the river has closed Highway 59 on the east side of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge, which is one of the main routes to campus.

If you’re traveling to campus from Kansas City, Kansas City International Airport, St. Joseph, or other points east, you’ll have to plan your route and redirect to either come up from the south on the Kansas side of the river or cross at another location like Leavenworth or from the north at Elwood/St. Joseph.

Below are some suggested alternate routes to campus, with links to Google Maps for your convenience.

Alternate Routes

  • From Interstate 29 out of KC or the airport, go north to Highway 92, cross the Missouri River at Leavenworth, then travel north along Highway 7/73 to Atchison. Google Map
  • From Interstate 70, take Highway 7/73 north through Lansing and Leavenworth to Atchison. Google Map
  • From Interstate 35, exit at Cameron and take Highway 36 west all the way through St. Joseph, cross the Missouri River at Elwood, and continue west on Highway 36 to Highway 7. Go south on Highway 7 to campus. Google Map
  • From Interstate 29 north of St. Joseph or from St. Joseph, take Highway 36 west across the Missouri River and continue to Highway 7. Take Highway 7 south to campus. Google Map.
