Dr. Rothstein earned his B.S. from University of Minnesota Duluth in 2015. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Dr. Rothstein worked at a paper company for 8 months as a mill technician. Dr. Rothstein also spent a semester separating whey protein isolates from milk. After researching plant metabolomics, Dr. Rothstein developed a strong interest in metabolic engineering, bringing him to Iowa State University for his graduate work. His graduate work entailed metabolic engineering and developing genome editing tools for lactic acid bacteria. After graduating from Iowa State University, Dr. Rothstein decided to work for a small start up company, Skroot Laboratory Inc, where he helped develop cell monitoring sensors for biomanufacturing. Dr. Rothstein led a team of researchers in a NSF SBIR Phase II funded project to aid in development and commercialization of the cell sensors. Dr. Rothstein’s interests include cell metabolism, fermentation, and cell sensing.
