Students in BCYC Immersion Biology class

BCYC Immersion - Homeschool Lab Credit

BCYC Immersion now offers the opportunity to earn homeschool lab credit based on participation in our Chemistry and Biology tracks! Lab credit can be offered for our Immersion Chemistry track. Below you will find the requirements set by homeschooling programs to receive lab credit at BCYC Immersion. If you don't see your homeschool below we encourage you to call them to ask how BCYC Immersion might help you fulfill your science lab requirements!

Seton Home Study School Students

Seton Lab Credit Requirements:

  • Complete 18 hours of laboratory work. Lab work includes preparing and designing each lab, setting up equipment, reading lab materials, performing the work, making observations, writing notes, making conclusions, and writing the formal report.
  • Write and submit two lab reports for Biology with photos included. For all other science subjects, write and submit four lab reports (photos optional).

Hours of lab work completed during the BCYC Immersion Biology or Chemistry tracks count toward Seton’s 18-hours requirement for a lab credit. Lab reports written at BCYC Immersion Biology and Chemistry may be submitted for Seton review and may count toward Seton’s requirement of two lab reports for Biology and four lab reports for Chemistry.

Kolbe Academy Students

Kolbe Lab Course Requirements:

  • Complete 18 hours of laboratory work consisting of at least eight different labs. The hours of lab work may include teacher explanations and the actual work needed to complete the lab.
  • Write and submit eight lab reports, either formal or informal. Hours spent writing lab reports do not count toward the 18 hours of required lab work.

Hours of lab work completed during the BCYC Immersion Chemistry and Biology tracks count toward Kolbe’s course requirement. Any lab reports (formal or informal) written during BCYC Immersion Chemistry and Biology tracks may be submitted for Kolbe review and may count toward Kolbe’s course requirement.

Mother of Divine Grace Students

MODG Science Course and Extra Lab Credit Requirements:

  • For a 1-credit hour science course, MODG requires a student to complete at least one lab.
  • Students who maintain a lab write-up manual or journal, and complete minimally 18+ labs (with minimum 18 lab write-ups) are eligible for an additional .5 credit of lab. (The 18 labs, with write-ups, are estimated to take approximately 60 hours.) A lab write-up is submitted to a Mother of Divine Grace Reviewer for assessment of the extra .5 credit. (Additional lab write-ups may be requested at the discretion of the Reviewer.)

Alternatively, students doing more than 18 labs (e.g., using the Wiles textbooks and doing all 30+ labs) may choose to use an hours approach, logging hours for the lab set-up, experiment, and clean-up. A lab write-up manual or journal must be maintained, and enough additional write-ups logged to yield a minimum of 60 hours. The log of hours and the lab write-up journal are submitted to a Mother of Divine Grace reviewer for assessment of the extra .5 credit of lab. (Additional lab write-ups may be requested at the discretion of the Reviewer.)

Mother of Divine Grace suggests that students pursuing a STEM degree after high school complete the additional .5 lab credit.

BCYC Immersion Chemistry and Biology tracks fulfill the one-lab requirement for a MODG 1-credit Chemistry or Biology course.

For students pursuing the .5 credit lab course, any labs completed during the BCYC Immersion Chemistry and Biology tracks count toward MODG’s extra .5 lab credit. Lab reports must be completed and submitted for MODG review for each lab done at Benedictine College’s Immersion program.

Alternatively, students opting to perform more than 18 labs may log the hours of lab set-up, experiment, and clean-up at BCYC Immersion Chemistry and Biology tracks and use them to count toward the minimum of 60 hours needed to obtain the extra .5 lab credit.
