Dennis Dunleavy, Ph.D. came to Benedictine College in 2011 and teaches visual communication, digital photography, signs and symbols, and new media. He earned his doctorate in Communication and Society from the University of Oregon in 2004, a Masters of Arts and Letters in English from Southern Oregon University, and Bachelor's of Art in Journalism also from Southern Oregon. Dunleavy has been contributing editor to the peer-reviewed academic journal Visual Communication Quarterly. In May 2020, he published a chapter on visual semiotics in the Handbook of Visual Communication and is working on a entry on the history of photography for the Encyclopedia of Journalism. Prior to teaching, Dunleavy was an award-winning photojournalism with experience documentary conflicts in Central America and Mexico. In 2006, he was named a "Top-Innovator" in photography for his writing on visual culture by American Photography Magazine.
