Social Justice Week
February 19-24, 2024
We are in the midst of the Benedictine College Social Justice Week. The annual event, now in its 38th year, offers student groups like the Benedictine College Hunger Coalition, the Black Student Union, Sociology Club, Ravens Respect Life, Ravens CARE, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, CRS University and others a chance to gain awareness on campus and in the community.
Monday, February 19: Unplanned showing
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: O’Malley-McAllister Auditorium, St. John Paul II Student Center
Watch Unplanned, the true story of Abby Johnson, one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation. She believed she was helping women…until the day she saw something that changed everything. Sponsored by Ravens Respect Life and Students for Life of America.

Tuesday, February 20: Empty Bowls
Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Location: Raven Roost, Haverty Center
Handmade bowls, made by ceramics students and faculty, filled with soup. $12 minimum donation for a bowl and soup. Proceeds benefit local food pantries. Food provided by Benedictine Dining Services brought to you by Aladdin.

Wednesday, February 21: “How Can Catholic Social Teaching Respond to the Transgender Question? Why ‘Speaking the Truth in Love’ Today is Both Arduous and Imperative”
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: McAllister Board Room, Ferrell Academic Center
Lucia Luzondo, attorney, practical theologian, television and radio host, and co-founder of Family Renewal Ministries, Inc., will talk about how transgenderism is affecting our society and why upholding another’s dignity necessitates us learning and speaking the truth. Discussion is welcome.

Thursday, February 22: “Grassroots Solidarity with the Homeless of Kansas”
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Murphy-McPhee Auditorium, Westerman Hall
Former President of Uplift Organization, Kathy Dean, and longtime Uplift volunteers, Jim and Jennifer Schmidt, will speak about their experiences with Uplift and how they have led to other outreach to homeless persons in Kansas City.

Saturday, February 24: “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” Bunk Bed Build Day
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 24: Brown v. Board of Education Museum
Time: 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Take a trip to Topeka’s Brown v. Board of Education museum. Explore the impact this tremendous court case had on our country. A 30-minute talk will be presented at the museum. Carpooling will be available. Sign up here or email wood2856@ravens.benedictine.edu.
