Join Benedictine College and Herzog Foundation for The National Summit on Civics in Catholic Education, July 26-28, 2026. The National Summit will showcase the integral role of civic education in K-12 Catholic schools. Education as formation should foster fidelity and responsibility in young men and women: love for God, for neighbor, and for country. We desire to form graduates who take their role as citizens seriously by faithfully pursuing truth and beauty in the public square. At this symposium, we will explore the history of civic-based Catholic education in America and generate ideas around civic engagement for our students today. Teachers and school leaders are encouraged to attend together to explore how your school can strengthen civic engagement in the classroom and in the community.

Speakers
Mark Bauerlein
Mark Bauerlein is a contributing editor at First Things, a trustee of New College of Florida, and Professor Emeritus of English at Emory University. He has served as Director of Research & Analysis at the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Chronicle of Higher Education, and countless other national publications.
Steven Vaughn
Steven Vaughn is the Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Lansing, and is responsible for school curriculum and teacher development. He has over 20 years of experience in education, with 6 as the principal of St. Therese school in Colorado, where he also served as the liaison for the Denver cohort of the Catholic Educator Formation & Credentialing Program.
James Hankins
James Hankins is a historian specializing in the Italian Renaissance. He taught at Harvard for 40 years and is now a Visiting Professor of Humanities at the University of Florida Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education.
