Great Books in the Philosophy Department

Almost all classes taught in the philosophy department involve students in reading of primary texts rather than textbooks: students read and discuss works by Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Descartes, and many others. 

Those who are interested in reading primary texts and discussing them in a “Great Books” style seminar can apply for a three-semester sequence that is offered in cooperation with the theology department. In these courses, Faith and Reason I, II, and III, students read original writings from Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas á Kempis, John Paul II, and many others. They analyze and discuss these writings in seminar classes, and there is a special emphasis on the harmony of faith and reason.
