Medical Mission Trips
Picota, Peru | Family Mission Company 2023
During this trip students were able to go to 8 different villages to administer care to the villagers in conjunction with two Benedictine nursing faculty. Every day mass was offered by Father Brett as many villagers are only able to attend mass once or twice a year. A village clinic was set up for everyone that wanted to receive medical services. At the village clinics the 10 benedictine students (pre-nursing, nursing, pre-med and other majors) were able to work in conjunction with other missionaries to provide holistic care. The students were able to participate in prayer groups, play with the village children while parents were receiving medical care, triaged patients by taking vitals and evaluating their medical problem, provided a pharmacy, provided home visits and dental care. In addition to serving the people of the community the family mission company provided prayer groups, individual prayer time and adoration to be able to build our faith while providing service.

Campeche, Mexico | Familia Misionera 2022
Four nursing students partnered with the organization Familia Misionera working at clinics assessing the patient’s medical concerns, as well as treating the patients. In the span of one week, a total of 1,156 patients were treated, 250+ teeth pulled, and 3,000+ prescriptions dispensed. One of the doctors overseeing this trip, Dr. Wilhelm, commented on the Benedictine nursing students saying “BC’s nursing students are a reflection of the program, and they did amazing! Despite the long hot days, they continued to provide compassionate care. One evening, the clinic did not end until just before 10pm because everyone was committed to seeing every patient.”

During this week-long trip students had the opportunity for daily prayer, assisting with medical clinics and fostering a community with the patients. This trip included four nursing students along with other students from Benedictine. One FMC missionary encouraged the students with this, “So many people walked into the medical clinic low-spirited, and the patients walked out with huge smiles on their faces”. At the medical clinics students were able to complete health assessments and prescribe medications while caring for both the physical and spiritual needs of the patients. Nursing student, Sarah Porretta, stated “This week of service was beautiful and truly life changing! Praise God!”
