S. Thomasita Homan, OSB, '70

S. Thomasita Homan, OSB, a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica, graduated from Mount St. Scholastica College with a BA in Education and minor in English, 1970. In 1979, she received her MA in English from Iowa State University, where she also received the Graduate English award and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi.

Thomasita is Director of Oblates at Mount St. Scholastica. She also writes and edits, gives retreats at Sophia Center, and is on the planning committee for the Mount’s sesquicentennial.

She is Professor Emerita at Benedictine College, where she taught in the English Department for nearly thirty years.  For several years, she served as Director of Alumni and Director of Campus Ministry.  At the college, she was involved in various committees, including Chair of North Central Criteria III, Chair of Rank and Tenure Committee, Advisor to the President, and Advisor for Loomings.

Her professional involvement at the national level, included: Board of Judges for Associated Collegiate Press and Faculty Consultant for Educational Testing Services. She was on the editorial staff of American Benedictine Review, Benedictines, and Threshold. Thomasita has given presentations to various groups on the Benedictine charism, writing, and topics related to her travel in Jordan, Italy, Israel, Syria, Germany, Ireland, Pakistan, India, Kazakhstan, England, Denmark, and her marvelous trip to Oslo Norway, as an invited guest to the Nobel Peace Ceremony in honor of our own Nobel Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai,  1964 graduate of Mount St. Scholastica College (now Benedictine College). She coordinated efforts for Professor Maathai to return to Atchison to celebrate in 2007 and arranged for her daughter Wanjira Mathai to speak in July 2013.

Thomasita also served her community as Formation Director and Scholastic Director and was on the Mount Academy Board of Directors for three terms.

Six of her seven siblings, three cousins, and a nephew attended Benedictine colleges in Atchison.
