2022 Benedictine Math Team: (L-R) Team coach Dr. Heidi Hulsizer, Kieran Amsberry, Nic tenBroek, and Liam Westhoff

A student mathematics team from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., took third place in the 2022 Kansas Collegiate Mathematics Competition. This year’s competition featured eight teams hosted by Benedictine College during the annual meeting of the Kansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Benedictine’s team was coached by Dr. Heidi Hulsizer, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and the team consisted of Kieran Amsberry, Nic tenBroek, and Liam Westhoff.  tenBroek, a sophomore, was also a member of last year’s first place team.

This year’s competition included teams from the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, Wichita State University, Emporia State University and Fort Hays State University along with Benedictine. All public and private undergraduate colleges and universities in the state are eligible to send up to two teams.

The students on each team worked together to complete 10 problems in about 3 hours. Each problem is worth 10 points. For full credit on a problem, the answer had to be correct and all supporting work had to be shown.
