Legacy Field

New Name and New Amenities for Soccer and Lacrosse Fans

Legacy Field surrounded by the Legacy Apartments and the John Casey Soccer Center.

Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, has announced that its soccer and lacrosse field has a new name: Legacy Field.

The change comes after donors provided new chair-back seats to the viewing area, new Field Turf with markings for soccer and lacrosse, an upgrade to the lighting, and a new digital scoreboard.

“To launch our upgraded game experience for both sports, we wanted a name that honors the history of this field, and the sacrifices made by soccer and lacrosse supporters to make a home at Benedictine College,” said President Stephen D. Minnis.

The building housing locker rooms, coaches’ offices and the press box will still be named after the late John Casey.

The field’s name was chosen for several reasons.

First, the name honors the benefactors who have made the current facility their own legacy, including the Raven Soccer Boosters and David Laughlin, ’67, the long time Benedictine College board member whose gift made it possible for Benedictine College to add lacrosse as a varsity sport.

When the Raven Soccer Boosters received the Cross of the Order of St. Benedict at the 2014 Scholarship Ball, including Tom Gorczyca, Craig Klos, Dennis Ayer, Dan Stewart, and to the family of the late John Casey, the event broke records.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Raven family, this facility is now seen as a premiere location in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and the NAIA,” Gartenmayer said. “It inspires our athletes to greatness, season after season.”

Second, the name honors the alumni who played in that area throughout the college’s history, from the days when the “Nowak Bowl” was located at the site of the current field, to the teams that called the new fields home in the 21st century.

“Generations of Ravens have fond memories of competing where Legacy Field sits today,” said athletic director Charles Gartenmayer. “The name honors their legacy of hard work.”

Third, the name will be a help to newcomers by indicating that it is located near the Legacy Apartments.
