Winter Weather Warning and Cancellations

Published: Saturday, January 14, 2017

As reported yesterday, the National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for Atchison County, in effect until Sunday evening. Roads and sidewalks will be dangerous in icy conditions and ice is more difficult to both remove and drive/walk on than snow.

Benedictine Operations will be spreading sand and salt, but everyone should be very cautious and try to limit travel. In the event of heavy ice on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, travel may be impossible.

Power Outages

Ice storms have been known to lead to power outages. In the event of a power outage, the campus community will be contacted through Raven Alert text messages and by Residence Life personnel with specific information. Click here for General Guidelines in Case of Power Failure.

Ice Storm Guidelines

When walking, be cautious of slick pavement and stairs. Always look for a handhold. Grass surfaces might offer better traction than sidewalks if they are untreated.

If crossing a street, even on campus, keep in mind that motorists will take longer to stop or may not be able to stop at all.

Dress appropriately for the weather. Hats, gloves, coats and warm shoes or boots are recommended. When driving in snow and especially ice conditions, slow down. Even 4-wheel drive vehicles may not be able to stop.

Fill up the gas tank before the storm hits and keep blankets, repair tools and some non-perishable food in the car in case you get stranded.

During icy conditions, keep in mind that Operations will be busy spreading ice melt and will not be available by phone. If you want to report an icy area or have a maintenance issue, please contact Security at ext. 8888 (913.360.8888).
