“Spooky Science” Set to Entertain Kids at Benedictine College

Student Group sponsors Concurrent “Trunk or Treat"

Benedictine’s “Spooky Science Fun Bash” for children is set for Friday, October 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. on all floors of Westerman Hall, the science and engineering building, on the Benedictine College campus. Students and faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Engineering, Nursing, Physics and Psychological Sciences are offering this free event to bring some fun science displays to area youth. This year, the Student Alumni Board will also sponsor a corresponding “Trunk or Treat” event in the small parking lot south of Ferrell Academic Center and east of Westerman Hall.

There will be numerous displays and demonstrations in the hallways, classrooms and labs of Westerman Hall, including The Ghost of Einstein, a pumpkin pendulum, a Haunted Chemistry Lab and much more.  The evening also includes face painting, mask making, skeletons and skulls, beanbag zombies and plenty of popcorn, cupcakes and candy.

Dr. Terry Malloy, chair of the Biology Department, explained that the Ghost of Einstein is a concave mask of the late scientist that appears to be 3-D and turns to follow the viewer’s movement. The Haunted Chemistry Lab includes dry ice demonstrations, colored fire and a “screaming” Gummy Bear.  Kids will also have the chance to see if air can lift them at a hover board exhibition.

“This is a lot of fun, but the goal is to stimulate curiosity and promote science in the broader Atchison community,” said Malloy.

Here are some of the Spooky Science displays and activities that will be available:

  • Jacob’s Ladder (lightning on a wire)
  • Pumpkin Pendulum (will the pumpkin swing back and hit you?)
  • Hoverboard (can air lift you?)
  • Carnivorous Plants (Venus Fly Trap)
  • Live Animals (snakes, tarantulas, mudpuppies, bearded dragons, geckos, tortoises, chinchillas)
  • Skeletons and Skulls (matching game)
  • Preserved Oddities (two-headed snake, two-headed pig)
  • Fishing Game (pull treats out of the mouth of a giant monster)
  • Face Painting, Mask Making
