2015 Service of Lessons and Carols | Benedictine College

Annual Service of Lessons & Carols

Published: Tuesday, December 8, 2015

The Benedictine College Music Department, along with the Office of Mission & Ministry, presented the annual Service of Lessons and Carols on Monday, December 7, in St. Benedict’s Abbey Church.  Modeled after the traditional Christmas Eve Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, originated in Cambridge, England in 1918, this service includes Old Testament readings and Advent hymns that prepare the congregation for the coming of Christ’s birth.

The nine lessons were interspersed with congregational singing of familiar Christmas carols and hymns, and special selections by the college choirs. Members of the college community recited scripture readings followed by special anthems by the Liturgical Choir, directed by Dr. Lara West and the Chamber Singers, Women’s Ensemble, and Concert Chorale, directed by Timothy Tharaldson. The Benedictine Brass, directed by Ted Hanman provided a wonderful prelude of carols before the concert and Dr. Ruth Krusemark was featured as organist for the postlude.
