Pilgrimage Starting Points

There will be two gathering points to join the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage:

  1. Main Starting Point – The bulk of the crowd will gather on the east side (Missouri side) of the Amelia Earhart Bridge. You should gather in the area to the west of the gas station and process across the Missouri River.
  2. Secondary Starting Point – Those wishing to process a shorter distance can gather at 4th St. and Main St. in the Atchison Farmer’s Market area. You will join the procession as it passes by and heads up 4th St. to the Benedictine Campus.

NOTE: Those who have mobility challenges are encouraged to wait on Benedictine’s campus for the arrival of the procession.

Shuttle Service

If you are processing, you will end up on the Benedictine College campus at the Murphy Recreation Center. You will want your vehicle to be on campus so you can easily depart at the end of the event. If possible, please drop off participants at one of the starting locations and then have only one person park the car and ride the shuttle back to the starting area.

Shuttles will run regularly from 2:00 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. on June 25 to move participants from parking areas to the starting points.

Parking Areas

  1. Murphy Recreation Center parking lot, accessible from Mound St. off 2nd St. This large lot is immediately south of the Murphy Recreation Center. Shuttle pickup will be in the drive between the parking lot and the Rec Center.
  2. Amino Center parking lot, accessible from 2nd St. This lot and the large lot just above it are north of campus at Wilcox Stadium. Shuttle pickup will be at the entrance to the Amino Lot off 2nd St.
  3. St. Michael Hall parking lot. This lot is accessible from 2nd St. and is located behind St. Michael Hall toward the north end of campus. Shuttle pickup will be at the entrance to the Amino Lot described above.

Prepare for the Procession

The procession will begin at 3:30 p.m. The Perpetual Pilgrims and the Eucharist are expected to arrive at the Missouri River around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25. The Atchison stage of the procession is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. Keep in mind that the procession from the east side of the Missouri River to the Benedictine College campus is a 2-mile walk, much of it uphill. If you have any health or mobility issues, will be pushing a stroller, or have anything else that could impact your ability to walk this distance, please consider this ahead of time.

You can also join the procession after it is across the river. Those who gather at the Atchison Farmer’s Market will join the group as it moves across Main Street and up the 4th St. hill. The route from this location is about a 1-mile walk.

You can count on being out in the heat of the afternoon for several hours, from gathering, to processing, to arrival on the campus at the end. Dress appropriately to protect yourself from the elements and wear good walking shoes. You should also have water available. There will be water stations along the route to replenish your supply.

A shuttle bus will follow those walking and anyone with any issue at all can get on board and complete the procession in that way.

During the Procession

Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. Please maintain a respectful and reverent attitude during the procession by joining in hymns and prayers or by observing reverent silence. Programs will be available.

What to Expect at the Conclusion of the Pilgrimage

The procession will conclude on the campus of Benedictine College where participants will have the opportunity to join the Benedictine Monks for Vespers in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium inside the St. John Paul II Student Center. After Vespers, here is what is happening:

  • There will be a free dinner featuring pulled pork for all participants, with seating both inside Murphy Recreation Center and outside at Raven Memorial Park.
  • Participants will receive a free Eucharistic Pilgrimage T-shirts and a free commemorative medallion.
  • You can enjoy Christian Praise & Worship music in Raven Memorial Park, located immediately outside the Rec Center. Recording artists John Marc Skoch and Catherine Kluempers will perform through the evening.
  • You can light a candle with prayer intentions in Mary’s Grotto, located on the hillside above Raven Memorial Park.

The Raven Store will also be open for additional shopping. The store is located inside the Haverty Center. It will be open on Tuesday, June 25, from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 26, from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
