Printmaking - Service-Learning Newsletter

May 31, 2018

This semester saw the first incorporation of service-learning in Professor Jay Wallace’s Printmaking I course. Professor Wallace modelled the assignment off the Veteran Print Project, which he participated in during his graduate studies. Benedictine’s version took a broader theme of “Lives of Service,” which included local veterans, monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey, and sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. After meeting several times with their individual partners and hearing stories from their lives, each student (and Professor Wallace, too!) had the exciting challenge of visually expressing one or more of those stories by creating an intaglio print. On Tuesday, May 8, a reception was held for those involved in the project, at which time each artist showed and explained the print they had made. A “print exchange” took place as well, which means that enough prints were made for each student and community representative to leave with a complete set that included every other print in the project. As an added bonus, community partners viewed a short video created by Mary Bugos, Student Service-Learning Assistant, which documented the students’ printmaking process. We have included that video here for your enjoyment!
