Susie Schaefer Hinds

A 1991 graduate of Benedictine College with a degree in journalism, Susie Schaefer Hinds always liked decorating.  After six years of working in the retail home furnishing business, she decided to go out on her own.  In 1997, she opened The Schaefer House Home Furnishings in Jefferson City, Mo. and the retail home décor store has since become a shopping destination for people throughout the region.

“As a woman and mother, juggling family and business is probably one of the most difficult parts of ownership,” said Hinds, founder and president of The Schaefer House.  “Faith is at the center of both, and I am blessed with the support of my husband, Dan, my mom, Rosie, and my family.  Together we get the job done!”

Hinds turned a small furniture shop in downtown Jefferson City into a major shopping attraction.  Customers are known to drive across the state to see what is new in the store.  Housed in an historic 100-year-old building, The Schaefer House features an always-changing, sweeping range of home furnishings, accessories and gifts.  In 2001, the company won the Small Business of the Year Award in Jefferson City.

“Attending Benedictine College and living in Atchison were God’s way of placing me exactly where I needed to be to kindle my interests and surround me with mentors,” she said.

Hinds had been mentored by Dan and Mary Carol Garrity, of the famous Nell Hill’s store in Atchison, while still a student at Benedictine.  Following graduation, she continued to work for them and even benefited from their advice when writing her business plan.  Today, the store has expanded to two floors and includes beds and bedding along with home décor.

In 2008, Hinds herself received the 2008 Woman of Achievement Award from the Zonta Club of Jefferson City.  The award recognizes women who have made significant professional and civic contributions to the central Missouri community.  Hinds also works hard to support Benedictine College through the Mid-Mo Ravens Chapter of the Alumni Association and the Mid-Mo Ravens Scholarship program.

In 2010, Hinds spoke of her entrepreneurial success when she delivered the 2010 Cray Lecture at Benedictine College.
