BALDWIN CITY – The No. 12 Raven women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season on Monday night with a five-point win over Baker University to head into the 2013 HAAC Postseason Tournament riding a four-game winning streak.
Benedictine (26-4, 16-2 HAAC) used a 54 percent shooting effort in the first to build a 15 point halftime lead over Baker (19-11, 12-6 HAAC) en route to a 85-80 win.
Baker converted 16 field goals in the second half, which included 11 of 19 from beyond the arc to outscore Benedictine 48-38 but couldn't pull any closer than five points.
Benedictine trailed by as much as five points out of the gate as the Wildcats held the Ravens to just two points over the games first 90 seconds.
After playing through three lead changes and two ties, Benedictine took the lead with 13 minutes to play in the first half on a basket by forward Jayde Reid (RsFr., Topeka).
Benedictine outscored Baker 29-16 the rest of the half to take a 15-point lead into the break.
In the second half, the Ravens quickly pushed their lead to 20 points before Baker started to heat up offensively.
Despite the near 60 percent effort from the floor and a 10-point scoring advantage in the second half, Baker just couldn't close against Benedictine.
Five Ravens finished in double figures, led by Reid's 16-point effort of the Benedictine bench. Guard Justice Payne (Jr., Stillwell) and post Liz Stinson (Sr., Stilwell) added 13 point while forward Erin Murphy (Sr., Olathe) and guard Kelsey Anselmi (Sr., Olathe) chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively.
Benedictine earns the No. 2 seed in the HAAC Postseason Tournament, which starts on Thursday. The Ravens will host a 7 p.m. game against Evangel University. A win would also allow Benedictine to host a HAAC semifinal game at 7 p.m. Saturday as well.
