National Qualifier Reflects on Meet Experience

It was a great experience to race in Vancouver, Wash., for Nationals Cross Country meet this year.  I did not know what to expect last year, besides a lot of rain.  The competition was stronger  but the mud was just about the same.  There were many great runners both individually and for the teams that we were able to compete against.

We arrived with enough time to run the course on Friday, the day before the big race.  It was a pretty simple course made up of two large loops and a small one to add up to our 5k distance.  On Friday we also had an awards banquet where athletes were recognized for their academic and running achievements.  There was a speaker from the Nike Team who told us about his experience running professionally.  Saturday was race day with over 330 female athletes competing and the same for the men.  Another highlight from the trip was driving to Eugene, Ore., after our race to visit the University of Oregon and Hayward Field.  We couldn’t leave without doing a lap around the track!

It was great to have Mike (Brubaker) and Jordan (Mahood) qualify for Nationals as well this year.  Since all three of us are seniors, it was a great way to finish out our cross country careers at Benedictine College.  Overall, the experience of Nationals has made me more grateful for all of the cross country seasons at BC, for our coach, and for the team we have.  I hope Benedictine will send many more to Nationals in the future.
