Ravens Sweep Peru St., Run Record to 4-0

  • Monday, February 24, 2003

Sophomore pitcher Ismael Casillas threw a complete game 5-hitter and junior Grant Hufford matched that complete game performance with a 3-hitter as the Ravens beat Peru State 6-0 and 5-2 in Atchison, KS last Saturday, 2/22/03.

In the opening game, seven different Ravens stroked base hits and freshman 2B Jose Santiago hit his first college home run to open the top half of the first inning. Senior DH Brant Ansley and sophomore RF Nick Neneman collected two hits each.

The Ravens recorded a triple play in the top of the fifth–a rare play in baseball. After giving up two bloop singles and a walk, Casillas made a Peru State hitter lift a lazy fly ball to RF Nick Neneman. On the exchange from catch to throw, Neneman dropped the ball. The umpire called it a catch. Nenman recovered the ball, threw to sophomore SS JJ Burress who tagged out a Peru State runner trying to advance to second base. The Ravens appealed to 2nd base, where the runner had advanced to 3rd without tagging after the catch, for the 3rd out.

Sloppy ball handling highlighted the second game. The Ravens committed 6 errors while Peru State committed 3 errors.
