Lessons and Carols Performance

The Benedictine College Music Department, along with the Office of Mission & Ministry, will present the annual Service of Lessons and Carols on Monday, December 5, in St. Benedict’s Abbey Church.  The Benedictine Brass, directed by Ted Hanman, will provide a wonderful prelude of carols beginning at 7:15 p.m. The full service will begin at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Modeled after the traditional Christmas Eve Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, originated in Cambridge, England in 1918, this service includes Old Testament readings and Advent hymns that prepare the congregation for the coming of Christ’s birth.

The nine lessons will be interspersed with congregational singing of familiar Christmas carols and hymns, and special selections by the college choirs. Members of the college community will recite scripture readings followed by special anthems by the Liturgical Choir, directed by Dr. Lara West, and the Chamber Singers, Women’s Ensemble, and Concert Chorale, directed by Timothy Tharaldson. Dr. Ruth Krusemark will also be featured as organist for the postlude.
