About Black Monks Rugby

The Benedictine rugby club team dates back to 1967, when it was known as the Ruggers.  It was disbanded in 1973, but was revived in 1996 as the Black Friars.  That team disbanded again in 2001.  Benedictine College student Randy Lewis brought the team back in 2003 as the Black Monks.  There are 34 players on the team, all certified by USA Rugby.  Benedictine College students Jack Hume, Jack White and Joe Moran serve as the team captains.

The Black Monks Rugby Club aspires to challenge students to intercollegiate competition through physicality, mental toughness, and teamwork. Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in America. No experience is necessary to play. It is an unexplainable sport of challenge, excitement, and camaraderie that the Black Monks Rugby Club stands for at Benedictine College.

Women's Rugby

Mission Statement

The Women’s Saints Rugby Club strives to work as a team to learn the game of rugby, to play to the best of our abilities, and to build community within our own team, our fans, and the teams we compete against.

About Saints Rugby

This club was started in recent years to bring a unique sport to the women of our college. Many of the women came into it with little or no experience so we have worked together to increase the knowledge and skill of our team. This is a club completely run by us, we select who on our team will be the captains, we schedule games and tournaments with the teams in our area, and we fundraise to make our games and travel possible. This team, along with the men’s rugby team, has become part of the tradition of Benedictine College. We love this rugby community and always welcome new players and fans!

  • Practices are every Monday-Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
