Coach Lane competed intercollegiately at Pittsburg State before transfering to and graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in Journalism. He then went on to a career in law enforcement, with two years at the Shawnee County, Kansas, Sheriff's Department and ten years at the Lawrence, Kansas Police Department.   He was awarded the department's Meritorious Service Medal for an incident which resulted in his retirement. 

A graduate of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Lansing, Michigan, Coach Lane is admitted to the Kansas and Colorado Bars, and is in private practice in Atchison.

Coach Lane has competed in many events ranging from 800 meters to the marathon.  He competed at the United States Track and Field Federation Championships in the marathon, placing 17th in 1976, 11th in 1977, and 13th in 1978. In 1985, Coach Lane placed 4th in the 1500 meters at the World Police and Fire Games in San Diego, Ca.  He also competed in the 1996 Boston Marathon.

This is Coach Lane's 11th year as the Raven's head cross country coach, and third as head track coach  Prior to coming to Benedictine, he was a Rule 10 cross country coach at McLouth (Kansas) High School, from 1994 to 1996. While at McLouth, the boy's team was league and regional champions all three years plus state runner up in 1994 and 1995 and sixth place 1996.  The girl's team also was a two time state qualifier, winning the league and regional championship in 1996.

After re-introducing cross country as a varsity sport in 1999, Coach Lane guided the Raven's women's team to their first national championship appearance in 2003 after winning the Region V championship, and being ranked in the top 25 teams for the season in the NAIA national poll.  Lane was also selected as the 2003 Region V Women's Coach of the Year.

Under Coach Lane, through the 2009 season, there have been 21 All-Conference and 10 All-Region V honorees (discontinued after the 2008 season), plus 13 NAIA Scholar-Athletes in cross country. 12 runners have competed at the NAIA National Championships.  He was named as the Heart of America Athletic Conference men's cross country Coach of the Year in 2006 and Heart of America Athletic Conference women's cross country Coach of the Year in 2009..  Through the 2010 indoor track season, Coach Lane has guided 73 Raven athletes to All-Conference 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals, plus 80 athletes to honorable mention All-Conference status in conference indoor and outdoor track for events of 800 meters and above.   Ten of his athletes have competed in distance events at the NAIA National Championships in indoor and outdoor track..  As head track coach, there have been additionally six athletes compete at the national championships, and eight additional NAIA Scholar Athletes in track.  The 2007-2008  women's Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor track teams, and 2008-2009 women's Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor track teams were all named as NAIA Scholar Teams.   

Coach Lane earned his Level I Track Coaching Certification in 2004, and his Level II Endurance Certification in 2005 from the United States Track and Field Association.  He is a member of the USATF Missouri Valley Organization.
