NAIA Scholar Team Honors Highlight Strong Academic Season for Athletics

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released its list of Scholar Teams of the Year winners on Tuesday.

Among the record number of 857 teams to be named, Benedictine College had four teams qualify for the honor.

The women's indoor track team, the women's outdoor track & field team, the women's cross country team and the women's basketball team were on the record-breaking list for their efforts in the classroom during the 2009-10 school year.

In order to qualify for the honor, the entire varsity team has to earn a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Of the four teams from Benedictine, the women's outdoor track & field team had the highest team GPA at 3.26.

In all, the cummulative GPA for all of the Benedictine athletic programs was over 3.0 for both the fall and spring semesters.

Over 225 of 456 student-athletes at Benedictine recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher each semester this past school year. Of those, 166 student-athletes qualified for the President's and Dean's List during this past school year.
