Gerard S. Brungardt, MD, BeL, '79 - Board of Directors

Dr. Brungardt is currently medical director for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, professor of internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita, and chair of the Ethics Committee of Via Christi Regional Medical Center.

A native Kansan, Dr. Brungardt grew up on a farm near Abilene. He attended Benedictine College in Atchison and the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City for both medical school and an internal medicine residency.

Dr. Brungardt practiced internal medicine for 10 years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita as an associate professor of internal medicine for the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he was associate chief of staff for ambulatory care.He has held his current position as medical director for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice for the past 14 years. This position allows him to combine his interest and expertise in clinical care, end of life care, ethics in medicine and teaching while providing patient and family centered care for the dying and their families. He remains actively involved in teaching on a variety of clinical and community levels.

Dr. Brungardt is board certified in Hospice & Palliative Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine as well as the American College of Physicians.

He completed a License (BeL) degree in bioethics at the Regina Apostolorum in Rome in 2008.

Dr. Brungardt and his lovely wife Cassandra are the parents of 10 children. They are members of the Church of the Magdalen and active in the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation.

Dr. Brungardt, numerous family members including, his grandfather in 1909, his father in1952, son Joseph in 2012, and daughter Virginia in 2013, as well as aunts, uncles and siblings, have graduated from St. Benedict College, St. Scholastica College and Benedictine College.
